There is talk of making Lakewood Ranch into it’s own city. Even though it’s a huge community with just about everything you need already in place, I’m not sure how happy the residents living there would be about this. What would be the cost of turning Lakewood Ranch into it’s own city? What are the positives and the negatives of doing this? I wonder how many people would move out of the area if this was passed? I’ve not actually ever seen a community transition into a city, so I’m not sure what all is involved with the process and the expense to the residents if they do decide to do this.
I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens and what is voted on.

Located east of Sarasota and just off I-75, Lakewood Ranch is a 7,000-acre master-planned community located on the Sarasota/Manatee county line on the southwest coast of Florida. Set on the 30,000-acre Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, the community is comprised of five residential villages divided into neighborhoods with a great deal to offer.
Fifty percent of the land at Lakewood Ranch has been set aside for recreation and open space, including lakes, preserves, and nature and activity parks. All are connected by more than 100 miles of sidewalks and trails. To date, Lakewood Ranch is the largest master-planned community in the state to earn the “Green Development” designation from the Florida Green Building Coalition. The certification indicates that approximately 9,700 acres of future development will meet “green” standards.
There is also tennis, swimming, fitness, dining, public & private schools, boating, fishing, social clubs and recreation. Lakewood Ranch offers acres of preserves, lakes and nature areas in harmony with the different neighborhoods on Lakewood Ranch.
