You love your neighborhood, but don’t know how to connect with the neighbors next door. Not a problem! This is more common than you think. Meeting the neighbors after the move seems more daunting of a task than it needs to be.
Today’s mindset of testing and connecting at a distance can make breaking the ice seem even more intimidating. Still, there’s a lot to be said for connecting with those who live in your neighborhood. So, how do you go about making your first connections that lead to neighborhood bonds?
Here are a few tips to connecting with your Parrish neighbors:
- Have a “move in” yard sale. True, most people have ”move out” yard sales to reduce the clutter before moving, but yard sales bring lots of traffic and especially from your neighbors. Remember, they’re probably anxious to meet you, too. Good idea: have some free refreshments for your new neighbors to enjoy.
- Take a walk. If you want to meet your Parrish neighbors, get out there and take a walk. Routine walking is a great way to say hi and start a casual conversation – evening walking serves the same purpose and more neighbors might be home. Leave the headphones home and look for opportunities to open a conversation. Compliments and open ended questions can go a long way in initiating small talk.
- Offer your help. If you have a skill that you can offer to your neighbors, like sharpening their knives, do so. Or if you hear of a group project, offer to pitch in. Build bonds with good deeds.
- Group activities. Belong to a book club, running club, or enjoy routine cocktail hour? Post flyers inviting neighbors. These are all opportunities to bring neighbors together.
Social media has its place, but step back and make real life connections with your Parrish neighbors.
