You may not know how common and widespread earthquakes are across the U.S. For that reason, it’s wise, even in Sun City Center, when preparing for an earthquake to have an earthquake survival kit ready.
Earthquake Stats
A recent U.S. Geological Survey found that 143 million Americans live in earthquake-prone areas. California comes to mind, and for good reason … it still tops the list of earthquake prone zones. There’s growing evidence that areas in the east and Midwest are vulnerable as well.
Survival Kit
It is advised that you have at least three days of supplies, though having enough for a week is even better. Keep the following close at hand for your survival kit and they’ll be useful in any emergency:
- Water: One gallon a day – per person
- Food and Baby Food: Non-perishable food that can be prepared without power. Be sure to pack plenty of baby food.
- Tools: Knives, spoons, forks, a can opener, and a Leatherman (multipurpose tool) will be useful.
- Pet Food: Pack enough food for your animals as you would for yourself.
- Flashlights: Candles are a risk if there are gas leaks.
- Radio: You will need a hand-crank or battery weather radio.
- Mobile Device: Have a smart phone and charger ready for such a disaster.
- Batteries: Pack the right sizes and have plenty on hand for each device you will be bringing.
- First-Aid Kit: Your kit should have band aids, bandages, wipes, cold compresses, pain relievers, and antibiotic ointments.
- Prescription Meds and Glasses: Have these ready to go, as you likely won’t be able to get refills during a disaster.
- Toiletries: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, sunscreen, toilet paper, and soap
- Blankets and Clothing: Think camping, as you may be doing this during a disaster.
- Vital Documents: Have copies of your IDs, medical records, family photos, passports, and insurance info.
- Money: Try to have a minimum of $100 in cash and a current credit card with a lot of available credit.
This isn’t meant to scare anyone. Preparation is the best defense against an earthquake.
